When Sofia joined the Mount St. Mary\u2019s lacrosse team in January of 2023, she knew she was gaining a new team, but what she didn\u2019t know was that this team would also give her a friend for life in her teammate Lizzie Stevenson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From the start, Lizzie welcomed Sofia to the team, \u201clifting her spirits and bringing back her smile,\u201d says Sofia\u2019s mom, Pamela. When it came time to nominate for Teammate of the Year, Sofia has no doubt Lizzie deserved to be nominated. \u201cLizzie is truly amazing. She always makes sure to give me one-on-one attention. She always includes me when I\u2019m at practice and she makes really good group activities. It makes me really happy,\u201d Sofia said in her nomination video. \u201c<strong>She\u2019s so funny and sweet and I really feel like she deserves this because she always makes me laugh and smile, and it all just distracts me from the medical situation that I\u2019m in and it makes me really happy that I get to do this kind of stuff with her.<\/strong> She\u2019s just such a sweet person and she works really hard and she\u2019s just really the best and I love her a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"2024 Teammate of the Year: Sofia &amp; Lizzie, Mount St. Mary&#039;s Lacrosse\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/U0tTSxfvzRk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLizzie always checks in on Sofia and plans perfect group activities with her,\u201d Pamela said. Sofia started sleeping with that stick next to her bed, knowing her teammates are always with her even when they\u2019re apart. In the months since, Pamela has watched her daughter grow into a more confident, more social, and happier child. \u201c[I\u2019ve seen Sofia] getting out of her comfort zone and opening up in conversations with the girls and in general,\u201d Pamela said. \u201c<strong>She said she feels<\/strong> <strong>like she has real friends. They celebrated Sofia\u2019s Signing Day on her birthday, and Pamela says the day \u201ccouldn\u2019t have been fun of more smiles!\u201d Before Sofia\u2019s children\u2019s hospital gala late last year, some of her teammates came over to braid her hair, dance and sing, and help her get ready.
